It is common to see these beautiful creatures swimming in packs, mouths wide open in hopes of a meal, as they glide down the tide lines of the Gulf of Mexico. We had an opportunity to see them whisk by as we stood in the Gulf recently. They are safe when not disturbed or “messed with” by curious humans, so don’t touch them. As the park rangers say, “leave no trace”!

Fun Fact: the very first Manta Ray nursery in the world was just discovered in the Gulf of Mexico!
A few common questions.
- What’s the difference between Manta Rays and Sting Rays? Manta Rays don’t have barbs, Sting Rays do. Sting Rays use their barb as a defense mechanism when threatened by predators.
- Can you safely swim or be in the water with Manta Rays? Manta Rays are not dangerous. They are even harmless and can’t hurt any diver or swimmer. They are naturally very curious and swim around the divers (or past your legs as we experienced).
- How smart are Manta Rays? Manta Rays are surprisingly smart. Mantas have huge brains, the biggest of any fish, with specially developed areas for learning, problem-solving, and communicating. The giant rays are playful, curious and might even recognize themselves in mirrors, a sign of self-awareness.
I hope you have the opportunity to see these elegant, beautiful, playful creatures for yourself during your stay at Ebb & Flow!
Beautiful sighting of seven young Manta Rays this weekend, 10/10/2021, in shallow water of Santa Rosa Beach FL.
